BROOKLYN, Mich. — Jimmie Johnson will go to a backup car for Sunday’s FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway (2 p.m. ET, FS1).
Johnson spun in the late stages of Saturday morning’s second practice session, causing damage to the front-end of his No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet after hitting the infield grass with the splitter.
“I got loose into Turn 3 and fought it for a long time and unfortunately came around,” Johnson said. “Did a nice job of keeping it off the outside wall, but came back down the hill and into the grass and the front end dug in pretty good.”
The team pulled out the backup car roughly 30 minutes prior to the final practice session at noon ET on FS2, as efforts to repair the car were to no avail.
The change of plan means Johnson will start last in the 37-car field after orginally starting 13th.
