The 2011 Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway was one to forget for Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Appearing to have the race well in hand in the closing laps, Earnhardt ran out of fuel in the final corner of the white-flag lap, leaving the door open for Kevin Harvick to steal the victory.
On this Throwback Thursday, we look back at what almost was for Earnhardt ahead of his final 600-mile race at the 1.5-mile oval.

Up front when it counted
After a disappointing 25th-place qualifying effort, Earnhardt methotically made his way up to the front.
Earnhardt led two laps as the race came to a close, but not the one that really counted.

Green-white-checkered restart
Following the 14th caution of the race, Earnhardt led the field to green for the the two-lap green-white-checkered finish.
During the caution period, Earnhardt feverishly tried everything he could to save fuel — shutting the engine off while riding on the apron in the corners so the car would continue to pick up the ounces of gas he had left.
Despite his valiant efforts, it wasn’t enough to win the race.
Harvick passed Earnhardt in Turn 4 heading to the checkered flag as the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet limbed to the line.
Had the race been 600 miles instead of 603, the outcome would have been way different.

Limbing to the line
In a matter of seconds, Earnhardt went from a sure victory to pushing his No. 88 car back to the hauler with an empty fuel tank.
Not that it was any consolation, but Earnhardt was still able to crawl to the line for a seventh-place finish.

Stealing the victory
Harvick lived up to his nickname on that hot Carolina Sunday night.
Taking advantage of Earnhardt’s misfortune, “The Closer” earned his first career Coca-Cola 600 victory in the No. 29 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet.

Gut-wrenching defeat
Earnhardt’s disappointment was apparent after the race.
“We weren’t supposed to make it,” Earnhardt said. “We ran out of gas and kind of knew it. We played our hand. I tried to save a ton of gas. I know I didn’t save enough but as much as I could.
“I’m disappointed we didn’t win,” he added. “I know all our fans are disappointed to come so close. But if we’d have won that race, it’d have been a gift.”
