Kyle Larson posted the fastest time in the opening session of Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series practice at Auto Club Speedway.
Larson’s top speed of 189.071 miles per hour led the pack in the first session and set a new track record with a lap of 38.081 seconds. Each of the top-five drivers beat the previous track record time.
Both Chip Ganassi Racing Chevys were fast as Jamie McMurray posted the fourth fastest time. Denny Hamlin scored the second-best lap with Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick third and Team Penske’s Joey Logano fifth.
There were a few issues during the opening practice session.
With about 24 minutes left in practice, Jimmie Johnson slid through the grass, damaging the nose of the car, forcing the No. 48 team to move to a backup car.
Nature played a role too, but not in the way of weather, an owl landed on the track, causing track workers to chase down the bird while the track was under the red flag.
The Cup Series will practice again at 5:00 p.m. ET tonight before qualifying for the Auto Club 400 at 7:00 p.m. ET.
